The rgdal package is a library that provides bindings to GDAL (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library). The global installation of GDAL is usually not a bad thing since, as far as I am aware, there are no backward incompatible versions, which is very rare these days. py install We have had success compiling code using the same version of Microsoft's Visual Studio used to compile the targeted version of Python (more info on versions used here. For the purposed of this tutorial I'm only installing GDAL. I have a large map application, written in Python.
